Melbourne Time Magazine Cover - Diversity Matter

I was tasked with creating a front cover image for the news magazine Melbourn Times. The cover design was to communicate one of the four articles provided. I chose ‘Identity Matters’ as it resonated with me. The constraints of this project were the limited use of expressive typography and content placement.

This article is about the importance of diversity and how it supports a healthy and functioning society. The editor would like an image that communicates a sense of unity, empowerment and empathy. They want the word ‘Diversity’ to be included on the cover
— Article 4: Identity Matters

I was heavily inspired by geometric shapes during my image-making process. It was interesting how you could use simple shapes to create abstract figures. I started with sketching on paper, to play around and see the different possible combinations I could create to convey the concept of identity.

I chose an earthy colour palette for this project to represent us and the land we stood on. The word ‘Diversity’ appears through the combined graphic elements.

Final Outcome

Conclusion

I think I could have explored more different graphical approaches when it came to conveying the concept of Diversity. Otherwise, I’m happy with how it turned out. My key takeaway from this project was the brainstorming process, to gain a better understanding of a subject to portray a message in the way it’s intended.
